What is your business speciality/USP?

D. R. Harris is fairly unique as a business as we are a full NHS and Private dispensing pharmacy which also has a range of over 400 of our own brand products encompassing shaving creams and soaps, fragrances, shampoos and conditioners and skincare items.

What might we be surprised to learn about what else you do?

In the last few years we reintroduced our Original Pick-Me-Up which used to be sold as a hangover cure, both to take away and to consume in the shop. We no longer serve it in the shop and it is a slightly different formulation to before, now in the form of a cocktail bitters which can be added to alcoholic and soft drinks. You can still copy the original drink by adding some of the Pick-Me-Up to water with a berocca.

Fascinating fact/statistic about your business

The company was founded in 1790 by a pair of cousins, Daniel Rotely Harris (the D. R. in D. R. Harris) and Henry Harris who was a surgeon. D. R. was an early pharmaceutical chemist and an early member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. The company continues to be owned by the Harris family as it goes into its 234th year.

What do you love most about the area of Mayfair & St James’s?

I love the variety and quantity of independent businesses in the area. Mayfair and St. James’s must have the highest concentration of independent businesses making and producing high quality, interesting, sometimes old fashioned products. The people behind these businesses are almost universally friendly and generous with their time and advice.
